Ruim tien jaar geleden kreeg Malkit Shoshan als architectuurstudent in Israël de opdracht een winkelcentrum te ontwerpen op een braakliggend terrein in de omgeving van Tel Aviv. Nader onderzoek wees uit dat dit terrein ooit een Palestijnse begraafplaats was. Deze ontdekking was de aanleiding voor haar tien jaar durend onderzoek naar de geschiedenis van Israël in relatie tot Palestina. Tot haar verbazing ontdekte zij dat meer dan 80 Palestijnse dorpen niet meer op officiële kaarten te vinden zijn, maar wel nog worden bewoond door meer dan 100.000 mensen. Dat deed haar besluiten de verschillende dimensies van het Israëlisch-Palestijns conflict in kaart te brengen. In haar boek ‘Atlas of the Conflict, Israel-Palestine’ biedt Malkit Shoshan aan de hand van honderden gedetailleerde kaarten een weergave van de processen en mechanismen achter de vorming van Israël-Palestina gedurende de afgelopen honderd jaar.
‘Atlas of the Conflict’ is het ankerpunt voor een nieuw project: ‘ZOO, or the letter Z, just after Zionism’. Met het verhaal op pagina 437 van het boek beginteen fascinerende verkenning van ideeën, momentopnamen en associaties die worden opgeroepen na het zien van een witte ezel, vastgebonden met een touw en bedekt met beige tape. Een witte ezel, die door een Palestijnse jongen wordt getransformeerd in een zebra, om tegemoet te komen aan het verlangen naar normaliteit in de Gaza. In dit geval in de vorm van een dierentuin als ruimte voor stedelijke recreatie.
‘ZOO, or the letter Z, just after Zionism’, is onderdeel van een onderzoek naar de relatie tussen architectuur enconflicten bestaat uit een installatie, een archief en twee boeken. De installatie is een kruising tussen een huis, een kooi, een VN-schuilplaats, een dierentuin…

Guus Beumer, director of NAiM/Bureau Europa, and Malkit Shoshan, architect and author of the book ‘Atlas of the Conflict’, Israel-Palestine’, cordially invite you to the opening of ‘ZOO, or the letter Z, just after Zionism’ on Saturday 3 March at 17.00 p.m.
Over ten years ago, as an architect student in Israel, Malkit Shoshan was assigned to design a shopping mall on an empty plot near Tel Aviv. Site research showed that the field was a ruined Palestinian cemetery. This discovery was the beginning of a ten-year research into the history of Israel in relation to Palestine. Malkit Shoshan was surprised to find out that there are over 80 Palestinian villages that do not appear on any of the official maps, but are still inhabited by more than 100.000 people. She decided to start mapping and to illustrate the various dimensions of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. With hundreds of detailed maps, the ‘Atlas of the Conflict’ reflects the processes and mechanisms behind the shaping of Israel-Palestine.
The ‘Atlas of the Conflict’ is the anchor point for a new project: ‘ZOO, or the letter Z, just after Zionism’. The story on page 437 of the book instigates a fascinating exploration of ideas, snapshots and associations that could be raised after seeing a white donkey tied with a rope, covered with beige tape and being transformed into a zebra by a Palestinian boy. This in order to fulfill the desire of the Gaza’s for normality, which in this case means possessing a zoo as a space for urban leisure.
‘ZOO, or the letter Z, just after Zionism’, as part of a research on the relationship between architecture and conflict, consists of an installation, an archive and two publications. The installation is a hybrid of a house, a cage, a UN shelter, a zoo…
